CHAPTER 3
SCHOLARLY PUBLISHING AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN THE ELECTRONIC ENVIRONMENT

Johann van Reenen
University of New Mexico

…scholars are losing control of the system that should exist solely to serve them, other researchers, and students throughout the world. Their research, supported by your institutions and by grants, is given to publishers who then sell it back to their library, sometimes at unjustifiable prices. The core purpose of the system — communication of research results — is being lost, as fewer and fewer researchers are able to access scholarly work. In many cases, faculty has even lost the right to use their own published research in their own classrooms!
